How the Summer Heat Can Negatively Affect Your Car
travel

If you’re someone who enjoys their car, it’s only natural you want to try and keep it in good shape. Many drivers give their vehicle the occasional wash and make sure there’s gas in the tank, but there’s more to maintaining a vehicle. Summertime is especially rough on vehicles because of how the summer heat can negatively affect your car. Here are a few things to watch out for to ensure your vehicle remains in excellent condition through the season.

Fluid Levels

In the same way that being out in the hot sun makes you sweat and leaves you feeling dehydrated, your vehicle’s fluid levels can suffer in the heat. Excessive heat depletes many of the essential fluids in your car at a faster rate. You want to keep an eye on your oil, coolant, and even windshield wiper fluid if your vehicle spends a lot of time in the sun.

Paint Job

The paint job is one of the first things people notice when they look at a car. A well-maintained paint job could even increase a car’s value. However, that paint is one of the first things to go if you leave your vehicle in the summer sun for too long. Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes a lot of photodegradation. This process is more obvious with brighter colors, such as red and yellow, than with neutral shades, such as black. However, when you notice the paint fading and losing its luster, you may need to visit a body shop to touch it up and move your vehicle into the shade.

Tires

An often-unforeseen way that the summer heat can negatively affect your car is through your tire pressure. Commercial tires have comfortable ranges of air pressure, and going too high or too low can put you and your vehicle at serious risk. The air starts to expand as it gets warmer, and that can increase your tire pressure and lead to a potential blowout. It’s a good idea to periodically check the pressure in your tires during the summer and adjust it as needed.
