Big Blue, big home victory for Swampscott’s girls basketball team on Saturday.
In a 36-28 win against Whittier Tech, the hosts received “balanced scoring,” as said by coach Katelyn Leonard.
She’s right. Jesse Ford (9 points), Sam Ward (8 points), and Olivia Quagrello (7 points, 6 steals) led the way offensively, while Victoria Quagrello and Lexi Farnum each hauled in seven rebounds.
Swampscott upped its record to 6-5 before Monday’s home game against Masconomet.

The Headers jumped all over Hopedale/Milford at home Sunday Morning, tucking five goals to start the day off right. Kyle Hart led Marblehead’s charge with two goals and an assist.
Avin Rodovsky (goal, assist), Cam Waldman (goal), Charlie Grenier (goal), Hogan Sedky (assist), and Crew Monaco (assist) all joined the fun, as did Leo Burdge who played well in net for Marblehead.

They’re the defending MIAA Division 1 state champions for a reason. The St. Mary’s icemen fought hard, but Pope Francis tripled up the Spartans in Springfield.
Matt Smith Jr. impressed with 44 saves between the pipes, while Aidan Fitzpatrick and Michael Nerich potted the St. Mary’s goals.

If you’re a Swampscott hockey fan, this one had it all.
Greg Balchenkoff scored two goals to go with an assist, Dom Pappalardo made 27 saves, Frankie Pappalardo scored his first goal, and Jackson Bartram scored the game-winning tally in the third period to put Swampscott over Peabody-Saugus, 4-3.
It was a great effort from Peabody-Saugus, however, which trailed 3-0 after the first period.

Lynn received goals from John Crowley and Owen Travers, but it wasn’t enough to top Somerville, which stormed into Connery Rink and tucked seven. Nicholas DeNino played well in net with 34 saves.

It was a tough ask for the Lady Spartans, who welcomed powerhouse Bishop Feehan into Connery Rink on Saturday. But in the end, they got it done.
Bella Freitas and Alyssa Norden were in charge of goal-scoring duties while Gianna Tringale was superb in the cage.

PLNR peppered Masconomet with shots in the second period, and it paid off in a 5-2 final at McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody. Alexa Pepper, Ava Buckley, Daniella White, and Vanessa Steinmeyer all found the back of the net for PLNR, which sits at No. 5 in the MIAA Division 1 power rankings – only below Notre Dame (1), Malden Catholic (2), St. Mary’s (3), and Lincoln-Sudbury (4).
WRESTLING
The St. John’s Prep wrestling team remains undefeated toward the end of January after beating Putnam, Agawam, West Springfield, and Springfield Central on Saturday.
Braedon Goes, Jimmy Lally, Will LaVallee, Jayden D’Ambrosio, Matt Pineiro, Vincent Bilotti, Rani Haddad, Marc Pineiro, and Alex Bajoras all went 4-0 for the Eagles, who stand at a perfect 28-0 this
Season.
The Lynnfield/North Reading wrestling team, behind first-place efforts from Gavin Iby (144 pounds) and James Fodera (190), placed third out of nine teams at Saturday’s Cohasset Tournament. Iby and Fodera also won their respective weight divisions last year when the Black and Gold finished dead last. A total of 10 LNR wrestlers placed. Nathan Barstow (106), David Glynn (138), Zack Morse (215) and Dylan Matthews (285) posted third-place finishes, while Jakob Hulett (113) placed fourth. Cam Arya (150) placed fifth and both Sam Bird (113) and Jack Cuddy (165) placed sixth.

The Pioneers dribbled their way to a 16-point win against Tewksbury in enemy territory – and an 8-3 record on the season.
