ROUNDUP: St. Mary’s heats up late to take down Winchester

In a “great win against a very good Winchester team,” according to coach Matt Smith, his boys hockey Spartans defeated Winchester, 3-2, on Saturday.

Fresh off his first career shutout, Matthew Smith Jr. recorded 25 saves as St. Mary’s outshot the opposition, 27-18.

Aidan Fitzpatrick led the charge with two goals, while JJ Avery potted the other.

“We were outshot in the first, 11-3,” Coach Smith said. “It was a slow start, but we came alive in the second and third. [We] held them to six shots in the third when it mattered.”

It was a Merry Christmas for the Big Blue, who upped their record to 3-0-1. Senior captain Derek Faia sported two goals and two assists, while fellow captains Will Roddy and Quinn Hitchcock chipped in with a goal and an assist each.

Greg Balchenkoff scored, Jackson Bartram had two helpers, and both Ryan Frary and Ben Tolosa dished out one assist. Between the pipes, Dom Pappalardo stood strong with 26 saves.

Captain Anthony Sasso and Kieran Corcoran each scored and dished out two assists, as host Fenwick doubled up Chelmsford on Saturday.

No home ice, no problem for The Prep, which squashed the Shamrocks after outshooting them 47-6. Cam Umlah potted two goals for the Eagles, who climbed to 2-1 on the young season.

Despite 46 saves from Nicholas DeNino, a goal from captain Jayden LeBlanc, and an assist from John Crowley, the Jets had no answer for the Panthers on Saturday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Lincoln-Sudbury 0

The Lady Spartans moved to 5-0 after handling Lincoln-Sudbury with ease at Connery Rink in Lynn. Kasey Litwin, Keira Twomey and Bella Freitas scored the goals, while Gianna Tringale registered another shutout.

Bishop Fenwick 2
Hopkinton 1

Home ice was taken advantage of as the Lady Crusaders edged Hopkinton in a 2-1 final. Fenwick looks for more this Saturday when it visits Stoneham (6 p.m.).
