What a start to the season it’s been for the Spartans baseball team moving to 8-0 on the season after a big win over Arlington Catholic. 

The Spartans went into enemy territory and walked out with a 9-0 victory. The route started with a solo home run from Isaiah Weston. 

There wasn’t much defense needed for St. Mary’s as it got a combined three-hitter from Josh Doney and Jacob Peterson. Doney earned the win from the mound. The duo combined for nine strikeouts. 

BASEBALL

The Sachems improved to 6-3 after Friday evening’s matchup with the Bulldogs. 

Saugus’ Cam Bernard got the win from the mound going four innings throwing a no-hitter, while  striking out five and walking two. 

The Sachems led 8-1 after three innings, however, the Bulldogs didn’t quit, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to two. However, there wasn’t enough time to complete the comeback. 

Connor Bloom and Shane Bourque led the Sachems with two RBI each. 

For the Bulldogs, Wilfredo Perez and Jariel Benzan each registered two RBI. 

Walpole 1

Extra innings were needed in Walpole as St. John’s Prep visited the Timberwolves. Unfortunately for the Eagles, an error in the bottom of the eighth proved costly as Walpole came out victorious 1-0. It was a walk-off hit from Walpole’s Rickie Hayes with a single to center field. 

Fans were treated to a pitching duel. Walpole’s pitcher Andrew Burke pitched 6 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts, three walks, and three hits. While St. John’s Prep Braeden Hurley started and pitched seven innings striking out four and giving up four hits.

The Magicians couldn’t protect their home field against the Falcons. 

Marblehead will look to get back to winning ways on Tuesday when it travels to World Series Park to take on Saugus at 4 p.m.

It wasn’t a game to remember for the Tigers. Lynn Tech couldn’t pull off the upset on the road. 

“Looking for that bounce-back game,” Tigers coach Eddie Lewis said. 

The Tigers are back on the road on Monday when they travel to Minuteman for a 4 p.m. game.

Sachems pitcher Taylor Deleidi got the win on the mound. Deleidi recorded six strikeouts while walking only one Bulldog. 

Saugus junior Lily Ventre had a great day at the plate going 4-for-4. Sydney Deleidi went 2-for-3 with an RBI.  

“It was a nice bounce-back game after a lackluster performance against Salem the other day,” Saugus coach Steve Almquist said. “This was probably the best the team has played this season against a really good Lynn English team.”

The Magicians mercy ruled Salem in five innings to improve to 7-1. 

Standout pitcher, Tessa Francis, registered a no-hitter striking out 14 of 16 batters. As dominant as Francis was on the mound, she did damage at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Spartans got the job done at Manning Field on Friday evening to move to 5-3 on the season. 

Ava Nason continues to find the back of the net with ease, scoring four. Vanessa Hall (3 goals) and Ava Korisianos (1 goal) got on the scoresheet. 

St. Mary’s will host Arlington Catholic at Manning Field on Monday at 5 p.m. 

BOYS TENNIS

With the match originally scheduled for 4 p.m., it wasn’t until 5 p.m. when it got underway due to bus constraints. Despite the delay Marblehead, on its home court, got the job done to improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in Northeastern Conference play. 

In first singles, junior Captain Etan Farfel beat senior Jack Eaton 6-2, 6-0. Etan controlled the match with his strong forehand, serve and drop shot according to head coach Elisabeth Foukal.

Junior Captain Jayden Janock was in trouble early, dropping the first set 4-6, but rallied back and won the final two sets 6-3, 6-0. 

The third win came from the second doubles team of Anthony Vizy and Ty Cooper. The duo showed their chemistry winning comfortably 6-1, 6-1.

The Tigers (3-4) couldn’t pick up the road victory, losing in four sets (12-25, 23-25, 25-22, 11-25). 

For the Tigers, Keury Mena had 16 digs, four kills, and four aces. Ederick Gonzalez had 15 digs, four kills, and two aces.
