press-releases

Talk about a fast start. Lynn Tech’s softball team scored 16 runs in the first inning against Cristo Rey, securing its first win of the season in a 22-7 final.

Pitching for the host Tigers was freshman Genevieve McCafferty, who punched out eight batters in style. Camilla Rufino Santos did a good job behind the plate and JB Beauchamp delivered “good, solid defense at second base,” according to Tech coach Beth Mercaldi.

The offensive charge was led by Zoe Wilson (2-for-4, 2 runs, 5 RBI), as well as Keila McGregor (2-for-4, HR), who brought in three runs in the second inning.

Tech travels to face Innovation on Thursday (4:30 p.m.) in search of back-to-back wins.

SOFTBALL

Revere 16
Lynn Classical 3

It was a tough one for the Lady Rams, as their record dropped to 4-3 after a double-digit loss to the Patriots (6-2). Lauren Wilson was 2-for-4 with an RBI-triple and a run, while Brooke Braswell was 2-for-2 and reached base four times.

Medford 5
Lynn English 4

Despite nine strikeouts and just five hits allowed from pitcher Arianna Laboy, the Bulldogs were edged by Medford on enemy grass. LeaNyah Pineiro had two hits and two walks, Laboy added another pair of hits, and Grace Mulloy went 2-for-3.

Lynnfield 15
Hamilton-Wenham 8

Lynnfield climbed back up the standings on Wednesday, seeing its record improve to 3-4 after taking care of Hamilton-Wenham. The Pioneers were led by Morgan Hubbard (3-for-4, 3 runs), Lily Williams (three-run HR; first career HR), and Olivia Kelter (2 hits), while Ava Gamache, Kaila George and winning pitcher Sophia Brown all had key RBI hits.

St. Mary’s 15
Bishop Stang 3

Chalk it up as three consecutive wins for the Spartans, who defeated Bishop Stang, 15-3, on Wednesday behind four RBI and a homer from Olivia DiSessa (4-for-4). Ryleigh Williams (2-for-4, 2 RBI, HR) and Alyssa Soule (2-for-4, 3 RBI) led the offense, while Aliza Crean-Oviedo punched out five batters in her complete game.

Salem 15
Saugus 3

As Saugus coach Steve Almquist put it, “It just wasn’t our day.” The Sachems were mercied by the Witches, 15-3, across six innings.

Felicia Alexander hit a home run in the second inning – her first career shot.

“It was great and I’m happy for her,” Almquist said. “She’s a great kid”

Lily Ventre (RBI single), as well as 8th graders Sabrina Tamburello (base hit) and Alannah Duong (RBI single, run) all came to play, too.

“We did have two 8th graders we brought up who each got their first varsity at-bats,” Almquist said. “I put both in during the fourth inning and both delivered.”

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 7
Bishop Stang 3

Call it the Spartans’ toughest test yet. In a nine-inning thriller, St. Mary’s (7-0) remained perfect with a road win against Bishop Stang. Michael DeMaino (2-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI, HR) and Jared Paone (2-for-4, RBI) led the offense, while Jordan Zimmerman (7 IP, 0 ER, K) and Jacob Peterson (2 IP, 2 K) got the job done in the pitching department.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Georgetown 12
St. Mary’s 11

In a tough one to swallow, St. Mary’s (4-3) fell just short against Georgetown at Manning Field. Ava Nason (7 goals) and Vanessa Hall (2) sparked the offense.

BOYS TENNIS

St. John’s Prep 4
Malden Catholic 0

The second doubles match was rained out in this one, but The Prep took care of business elsewhere. Jack Prokopis, Luke Free, and John DeAngelis won their singles matches with ease, while Luke Prokopis and Boris Kouzminov dominated first doubles.

The Eagles flew to 5-0 with the win.
