In her Lynn English girls basketball debut, coach Sydney Brennan (Bishop Fenwick graduate) and her team lost an overtime heartbreaker. Medford escaped the Bulldogs’ raucous house in a 60-55 final, but not without English heart.

Amara Flores – who nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game in the final seconds of the fourth quarter – led English (0-1) with 24 points, but her strong play wasn’t enough to combat the foul trouble of the Bulldogs – five of whom fouled out.

Jaylen Novas-Rivera also played well for English, which returns to action Thursday at Revere with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.

Lynn Classical 34

Despite strong performances from Divine Egbuta (10 points) and Kaleigh Bullock (8), Classical (0-1) began its season in unfamiliar territory after last winter’s 20-0 regular season.

“[It was a] tremendous effort by the Lynn Classical Lady Rams,” said coach Tom Sawyer.

Marblehead 54
Beverly 40

Marblehead led just 27-25 at halftime, but pulled away to hand Beverly an early-season loss.

“It was a really good game. We were happy and got a good win on the road,” said Marblehead coach Paul Moran.

Kate Burns (14 points, 15 rebounds) and Katie Pine (12 points) established their veteran presence for the Magicians.

“They’re our senior leaders and we always rely heavily on senior captains,” Moran said.

Ramona Gillett (10 points, 10 rebounds) and freshman Ainsley McDonald also played well for Marblehead.

In Peabody’s first game, it took care of Masconomet with ease after an early 33-13 cushion. The Tanners were led by Logan Lomasney (21 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists) and Ally Bettencourt (18 points, 5 assists, 6 steals).

Cardinal Spellman 24

Two games, two blowouts for the Spartans (2-0) after their 82-24 thrashing of Spellman on Tuesday. Freshman Bella Owumi (21 points) led the way while 8th grader Charleigh Green (10 points, 11 rebounds) and freshman Lily Norton (6 points, 9 assists) impressed.

St. Mary’s hosts Masconomet Friday at 6:30 p.m. before visiting Pope Francis Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Tech girls must like playing on the school’s new hardwood, as the Tigers (2-0) picked up another win – this time, against Nashoba.

Engelyz Bingham (17 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists), Allison Morales (23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 blocks), Amy Huynh (14 points, 3 rebounds), Aliyah Volquez (9 points, 9 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists, 2 blocks), and Niya Bingham (6 points, 6 rebounds) all came to play.

Captain Cecilia Kay had 23 points and 8 rebounds to lead Bishop Fenwick (1-0) to a season-opening win against Malden Catholic.

Caitlin Boyle (14 points, 9 rebounds) and Celia Neilson (7 points, 6 assists, 5 steals) contributed for the Crusaders, who return to action against Archbishop Williams on Friday.

With Michael McCarthy taking over as head coach for KIPP, his Panthers got the job done against Lowell Charter, 36-29, on Tuesday.

Sky De La Cruz (13 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds) and freshman Hailey Herrera (9 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds) performed well.

Swampscott 25

Game one of the season went to the Sachems (1-0) as they outlasted the Big Blue (0-1) in enemy territory. Devany Millerick (3 points) was everywhere on the glass, while Peyton DiBiasio dropped 17 points for Saugus.

Swampscott was led by freshman Olivia Quagrello (11 points and 10 rebounds).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynn English 86
Medford 49

The Bulldogs took care of business, 86-49, against Medford on the road. Kyle Kemembin (19 points, 10 rebounds), Marvin Perkins (15 points, 12 rebounds), Denzell Guillen (14 points), and Louis Ledesma (12 points) led the charge.

With his double-double, Kemembin was named “Dawg of the Game” by coach Alvin Abreu and his staff.

Cardinal Spellman 41

In an overtime thriller, St. Mary’s boys basketball team (2-0) survived against Cardinal Spellman. In the five-point escape, JJ Martinez put on a show with a game-high 30 points (second consecutive 30-point game).

“We got lucky tonight,” said coach Dave Brown. “We played like a very young, inexperienced team. I expected to have games like this, so it’s good that we found a way to win playing as badly as we played.”

In a clash of Northeastern Conference elites, Marblehead edged Beverly, 65-63, on its home floor. The Magicians return to action Tuesday against Salem Academy (7 p.m.).

TRACK AND FIELD

The St. Mary’s girls fell short against Cardinal Spellman, but topped Arlington Catholic, 57-30. Kelsey Kwiatek took first in the mile (5:49), while Mirabelle Calaunan snagged first in the 55-meter hurdles (her first hurdles race).

The boys fell to Spellman despite a first-place performance from Thomas Hooks (high jump, 6’).
