ROUNDUP: Classical volleyball too much for Medford

It was a clean sweep for the Rams (8-3) beating Medford in three sets. Despite winning each set, it was a back-and-forth game with Classical prevailing 25-22, 25-23, 28-26. 

Kenzel Lantano registered 31 assists, four aces, and four digs. Long Pham had a solid performance with 14 digs and was flawless in serve receive with zero errors. 

Head coach Chris LeBlanc praised Pham for his performance. 

“The star of the day was sophomore libero Long Pham who showed up every time the Rams needed a point,” LeBlanc said. “From his consistent effort in serve receive to his ability to dig Medford outside Ellis Vazquez (Rivier College commit), Pham was the steadying defensive influence the Rams needed all night.”

BASEBALL

St. John’s Prep 4

Malden Catholic 3

The Eagles got the job done on the road. Cam LaGrassa, Gavin Gold, and Will Shaheen each registered two hits and an RBI. 

St. John’s Prep will be back on the diamond on Wednesday when it travels to St. John’s Shrewsbury at 4 p.m. 

St. Mary’s 1

Masco 0

The Spartans defended Fraser Field with a 1-0 win over Masco. 

Jack Zimmerman had another performance to remember going six innings and striking out four. 

Devin Duval was the lone scorer on the night, but the Spartans only needed one run to remain undefeated and go to 9-0. 

Medford 8

Lynn Classical 7

Despite a 3-for-4 two RBI effort from Christian Figueroa at the plate, the Rams couldn’t get over the line against the Mustangs. 

Rolky Brea (1-for-4) and Almani Gerardo (1-for-3) both had two RBI in the loss. 

Minuteman 7 

Lynn Tech 6

It was a close game between two evenly matched teams, unfortunately for the Tigers, they came out on the wrong end. 

The Tigers led 6-1 in the fourth inning but Minuteman got into a rhythm to get back into the game. 

“[We] played a lot better, but unfortunately, we’re still looking to get back on track,” Lynn Tech coach Eddie Lewis said. 

Lynn Tech is back on the field on Thursday when it faces local rival KIPP at 4 p.m.

Bishop Fenwick 9

Danvers 4

The Crusaders scored a run in every inning besides the first and sixth to get the job done on the road. 

With the score tied at two after the second inning, Bishop Fenwick’s offense found its groove. The Crusaders scored one run in the third, four in the fourth, and insurance runs in the fifth and seventh to pick up the victory. 

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 8

Archbishop Williams 4

Make it four straight wins for the St. Mary’s Spartans (4-2). After dropping its first two games, St. Mary’s found the winning formula and is in fine form. 

Brooke Moloney stood out going 3-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run. Aliza Crean-Oviedo was on the mound and went the full distance to earn herself another win. 

Beverly 4

Peabody 3

In a tight and exciting match, Beverly (7-0) protects its home field with a walk-off win over the number four team in Division I Peabody Tanners (4-2). 

Peabody struck early, scoring in the third inning with an RBI single from Lizzy Bettencourt. 

Beverly responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a RBI single from Sophia Balducci. Balducci later scored on an error to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Lizzy again brought in a run with an infield single scoring Abby Bettencourt, with Logan Lomasney following to make it 3-2. 

In the final inning, Beverly had bases loaded with zero outs. A Panther was hit by a pitch allowing the tying run to go home. Then a few moments later a passed ball scores the runner from third.

Beverly remains perfect in the Northeastern Conference (6-0). 

Pentucket 2

Lynnfield 0

It was a tough outing for the Lynnfield Pioneers as they came up short on the road. Senior pitcher, Sophia Brown, pitched one of the best games of her career according to head coach Hector Longo. 

“She moved the ball well, allowing only five hits and three walks while striking out five,” he said. 

Lynnfield got hits from Ava Gamache, Morgan Hubbard, Catie Kampersal, and Lily Williams.

Marblehead 6

Malden Catholic 1

It looked like the Magicians were going to lose a close game to Malden Catholic as they trailed 1-0 in the sixth inning. However, Marblehead showed why it’s one of the better teams in the NEC, scoring six runs in the sixth. 

With Isabel Mortensen and Hailey Schmitt on base, after they both hit singles, Tessa Francis brought them both in to take the lead. 

The runs started to pour in after that as the Magicians added an additional four runs to make it 6-1. 

Francis got the win on the mound going seven innings with 12 strikeouts and allowing one run on three hits. 

Swampscott 7

Salem 3

Swampscott got the big road win on Monday evening. On the mound, Swampscott’s Hayden Haskell recorded 10 strikeouts in the complete game win. Swampscott finished with 13 hits in the game. 

Olivia Barletta went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double for Swampscott. Lauryn Fahey recorded a two-RBI double in the fifth inning to help extend the Big Blue’s lead. 

Medford 10

Lynn Classical 2

Medford (8-1) showed why it’s one of the best teams in the area with the win over the Rams (4-4). 

Classical’s Nevaeh Eth went 1-for-2 and scored a run, while teammate Emma Chevalier recorded an RBI single. 

Revere 12

Lynn English 3

Despite a quick two runs in the first inning for the Bulldogs, Revere had too much offense on the day. 

Starting pitcher Arianna Laboy pitched 5 2/3 innings and registered nine strikeouts. 

BOYS LACROSSE

Swampscott 12

Winthrop 11

Big Blue, big comeback for Swampscott who overcame a 9-4 deficit in the fourth quarter. 

Jason Rothwell scored four goals, Liam Keaney (3 goals, 3 assists), and Max Field (3 goals) paced the Swampscott offense. 

“Unbelievable come back in the fourth quarter.  We were down 4 to 9 to start the qtr and seniors Max Field and Carson Palmer refused to quit,” Swampscott coach Geoff Beckett said.  

In overtime, Keaney registered the winning goal to improve Swampscott’s record to 9-1. 

Marblehead 8

Beverly 7

The Magicians showed their offensive balance, scoring goals from seven players against Beverly. 

Marblehead will look to keep up its efficient attack on Wednesday when it hosts Danvers at 4 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Swampscott 19

Winthrop 2

Another day, another big win for the Big Blue at Blocksidge Field. The hosts took care of the Vikings to improve to 7-1 on the season. 

Avery Laundry and Cecilia Tripp scored four goals each, while Coco Clopton and Mia Dahlman chipped in with a hat-trick. 

In net, the formidable Lilah Capla registered six saves in the win. 

The Big Blue visits Gloucester on Thursday. 

Beverly 15

Marblehead 6

It was a second half to forget for the Magicians on home turf. Marblehead (4-5) trailed by two goals at halftime (3-5). In the second half, Beverly found its rhythm and made it hard for Marblehead to stop them. 

Freshman Kathryn Commoss registered two goals, one assist, and two ground balls, while Ramona Gillett scored a goal, provided two assists, and picked up five ground balls.

Freshman goaltender Molly Bullard made 14 saves.   

St. Mary’s 16

Arlington Catholic 10

At Manning Field, both teams were tied at nine before St. Mary’s went on a 7-1 run in the fourth quarter to win by six goals. 

Ava Nason scored seven goals to lead the Spartans offense. Cassidy Cheny and Vanessa Hall each chipped in with four goals in the win. 

Peabody 12

Burlington 11

The Tanners got the job done on the road in overtime. 

After the first quarter, it wasn’t looking good for Peabody as it trailed 6-1. Then the defense stepped up. 

“Connie Patturelli, Kayla Landry, Addy Merrill, Aaliyah Sainato, and Caitlin Snow were stellar on defense and sparking our rally,” Head coach Michelle Roach said. 

Ally Bettencourt (3 goals) scored the winning goal, while teammates Madi Barrett and Brooke Lomasney (4 assists) were clinical in front of the net scoring four goals each. 

Victoria Vaz (1 assist) and Ari Alvarado (1 goal, 1 assist) registered points in the win. 

BOYS TENNIS

Lynn Classical 5

Lynn English 0

The Rams (4-1) earned bragging rights over rival Lynn English on Monday afternoon. The Rams swept the Bulldogs and were led by first singles  Victor Bun who won his match 6-1, 6-1. 

Second singles Axil Ortiz edged the first set 6-4, before taking care of the second set 6-1. Third singles Andy Ly, won both sets 6-1, 6-1. 

First doubles Donovan Lam and Ori Beato took care of their opposition 6-2, 6-1. The second doubles team (Tommy Prou and Julian Jarjour) won by injury forfeit. 

Marblehead 5

Winthrop 0

The Winthrop Vikings couldn’t make use of home-court advantage against the Magicians. On the newly renovated courts, the Magicians improved their record to 5-2. 

First singles and second singles didn’t drop a game to their respective opponents. Etan Farfel and Jayden Janock beat their opponents 6-0, 6-0. 

First doubles ​​Anthony Vizy and Ty Cooper showed they were a hard duo to stop as they won 6-0, 6-0. 

St. John’s Prep 5

St. John’s High 0

The Eagles remain undefeated after a sweep of St. John’s High School in Danvers. John DeAngelis, Jack Prokopis, and Luke Free all took care of business in singles. 

In doubles action, Luke Prokopis and Boris Kouzminov beat Andrew D’Anelo and Lukas Pannenborg 6-3, 6-2. 

Mark McDuffee and Alex Melville rounded things up for the Eagles at second doubles winning 6-3, 6-0. 

St. Mary’s 3

Bishop Fenwick 2

The Spartans got the victory over rival Bishop Fenwick. 

First singles Thomas Shea won in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). In second singles, Steve Shea won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. 

St. Mary clinched the win with first doubles (Thomas Weber and Jason Spaulding) winning 6-0, 6-2. 

Lynnfield 3

Hamilton-Wenham 2

First singles Dan Levin (6-2, 6-2) and second singles Shea McCarthy (6-2, 6-2) won their respective matches. 

Second doubles Shlok Kudrimoti and Slate LoPilato were the deciding factor in the match winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. 

GIRLS TENNIS

Marblehead 5

Winthrop 0

The Magicians (2-3) took care of the Vikings at home. Marblehead had three varsity players making their debut. 

Sarah Munroe made her debut at third singles (winning on straight sets), while  Abbie Goodwin, and Reese Friedman made their debuts on first and second doubles. 

Lynn Classical 4

Lynn English 1

The Rams got better of their rival on Monday.

First singles Amber Sotomayor continued her dominance this season with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Sotomayor has only lost one game in four matches this year. 

Senior captain Linda Jallow won her respective match 6-0, 6-1. Diana Quach won 3rd singles 6-2,6-0. Second doubles team of Emma Field and Bridgett Toomey won their match 6-2, 6-0. 

Danvers 3

Swampscott 2

Danvers went to Swampscott and stole a win over the Big Blue. Danvers entered the match unbeaten and continued its impressive start to the season with a win over a quality Swampscott team. 

Senior captain Victoria Quagrello and freshman Eve Byrne won their match in a thriller. The doubles team won  7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (7-4), and 10-8 in a third set tiebreaker. 

Twins, Ava and Alexia O’Donnell at second doubles won their matchup 6-2. 6-1.
