To the editor:
In a town divided with the upcoming Swampscott Select Board elections, sometimes the lack of noise becomes deafening. Such has been the case with recent rumblings about candidate Katie Arrington. There are times for chatter and there are times for reason. Moreover, the folks who walk quietly may in fact carry the biggest stick. We have been blessed with two ears over just one mouth; something to consider. Perhaps the people with the most to offer do not rely on the antagonistic effort of their opponent to give them the floor to their agenda, but actually listen, gather the facts, and carefully consider their position on town matters. This step takes time. Each discussion is not about Katie Arrington, but about the people of whom she asks for their concerns. It takes time.
Careful consideration of platform leanings doesn’t happen on social media. These platforms are a vacuum of negativity born from a select vocal few that take away from the core values and direction of this town and diminish the spirit in which we prosper long-term as a community. Speaking with voters, hearing what they want, and replying in due time, with facts that are born from conversations with stakeholders — the voice of the community — is what makes a true voice of the community and not just what may be assumed from a very vocal few.
Personal agendas, attack verbiage, and innuendoes from political remoras do not make for an effective leader. For this reason, my vote, along with many others, is in favor of Katie Arrington.
Whatever you choose to do on election day, just remember that it is up to you to make sure that your voice is represented in the polls and in the years to come. Will your voice and your concerns be heard beyond election day? Katie Arrington can be your voice. Your voice matters. She is listening!
