In all the years that Hollywood has made movies, it has worked to incorporate messages of patriotism in its films and highlight the history of America. However, some movies have entered a class of their own when it comes to being incredibly patriotic films. Hollywood’s most patriotic movies of all time are unforgettable and will stand the test of time.
It’s been almost 30 years since Independence Day premiered in 1996, but Bill Pullman’s speech urging everyone in the world to come together still holds strong. This great blockbuster shows what the world can do when met with destruction at the hands of evil aliens, and who leads the charge? None other than Americans. Even when spirits are low after aliens blow up the White House, Americans still hold strong and continue to fight, something that it’s gotten pretty good at doing over the last 250 years.
Captain America has been a leader in the MCU over the last 15 years, serving as a symbol of American patriotism. While his relationship with the country may sour in some later movies, his first film highlights everything good about the United States and doesn’t shy away from highlighting the power of the American flag. The American flag has a huge role in pop culture and media, and while there are a lot of positive portrayals in different movies, the symbol of the flag in Captain America: The First Avenger is unbeatable.
Steve Rogers is also a good example of what Americans can do. He believed in his country, which gave him the tools needed to fight in World War II, save captured allied soldiers, and save the world.
Near the tail end of the Cold War, America needed to continue fighting against communism and the Soviets, and there was no one better at doing this than Rocky. Rocky movies had been produced throughout the preceding decade, but the patriotic themes in Rocky IV stand above the rest. Ivan Drago, a boxer from the USSR, comes to America and kills Rocky’s rival, Apollo Creed, in the ring. Frustrated by Drago’s lack of respect for Creed, Rocky returns to the ring with Drago in the Soviet Union on Christmas. It’s one of Rocky’s hardest fights, but in the end, he comes out on top, showing that no matter how strong the Soviets may look, Americans can defeat them.
One of the best movies of the last hundred years is also one of the most patriotic. Steven Spielberg wanted to honor the Greatest Generation, who fought and sacrificed themselves in World War II, and he did so with flying colors. Saving Private Ryan highlights that no matter the odds or how difficult something may be, America and its soldiers have something to fight for and protect. While the story itself is fictional, the honor and bravery of the troops depicted in the film are real. This is one of the best stories to ever bring that spirit to screens worldwide.
There are a lot of patriotic Hollywood movies, but some are extremely memorable. Plenty of other patriotic movies never made the same impact, so while it’s important to also remember them, they simply can’t stand up to the greats on this list.
